Bulk solids can be delivered in drums, as a kind of intermediary in between bags and Big Bags. The format is convenient as it can hold more powder than a bag, the container can also be re-used in certain circumstances. However, safely discharging the powder from drums is not necessary easy.
This page is focusing on a potential solution : drum dumper (drum rotators). A distinction is done in between bulk solids that do not generate a lot of dust (grains, granules, pellets) and powder that do generate dust when discharge.
If there is no or very reduced dust generated when discharging a material, a simple drum drumper can be used.
After having opened the drum, it is fixed on a trolley that allows to lift and rotate the drum, thus letting the materials flow out of it. A chute helps to direct the bulk to a reception hopper where the solids can be further processed (for example sent to a mixer by pneumatic conveying)

This is simple and efficient but unsuitable if the bulk solids are dusty, which would lead to unacceptable levels of dust in the environment for such an open process.
In order to avoid releasing dust in the environment while tipping a drum, some manufacturers are proposing solutions to contain the dusts (dust containment solution) by using a cone and discharge tube that can be fitted directly to the top of the drum.
The drum is opened, fitted with the discharge cone, which is also equipped with a valve in order to control when the powder will be released out of the drum, and then tilted (lifted and rotated) to a reception hopper.
The reception hopper must have a cover with an inlet sized to the drop tube of the drum dumper. Additional dedusting provisions could be implemented like a filter, possibly with a fan, on the discharge hopper.
